I’m Danny, also known as the boleyn poet, due to my love of words, and also West Ham. I’m now 56 years old and have been a fan for as long as I can remember. I grew up in Dagenham, which is just 5 stops away from our spiritual home at Upton Park . My wife is also a passionate hammer and I met her while interviewing her for a job at the ground. I worked there first in the early to mid 1980s painting the crash barriers pre season and then worked for many years at the ground where I did virtually everything. I was club mascot at times and took fans on tours of the stadium and also had the pleasure of playing on the hallowed turf many times for the staff football team.
Mi chiamo Danny, conosciuto anche come Boleyn Poet, per il mio amore per le parole, e anche per il West Ham. Adesso ho 56 anni e sono un tifoso da quando io ho memoria. Sono cresciuto a Dagenham, a soli 5 fermate di distanza dalla nostra casa spirituale Upton Park. Mia moglie è anche lei una hammer appassionata e l’ho conosciuta mentre la intervistavo per un lavoro allo stadio. Ho lavorato lì per la prima volta nei primi anni ’80 dipingendo le barriere prima della stagione e poi ho lavorato per molti anni allo stadio, facendo praticamente di tutto. Sono stato la mascotte del club in alcuni momenti, ho accompagnato i tifosi in tour dello stadio e ho anche avuto il piacere di giocare molte volte sul sacro terreno per la squadra di calcio dello staff.
How was your passion for West Ham born? Com’è nata la tua passione per il West Ham?
I was born in 1967 and always loved football, but mainly I liked certain players. Not just West Ham players but those who entertain the crowd . I was taken in the late 1970s to see us play Liverpool and was just taken by the whole atmosphere of the occasion. Then the 1980 cup final against Arsenal was the day at the age of 12 and half that I truly understood what being a hammer meant . From that day I’ve never known anything else.
Sono nato nel 1967 e ho sempre amato il calcio, ma soprattutto mi piacevano certi giocatori. Non solo i giocatori del West Ham ma anche quelli che divertivano il pubblico. Sono stato portato alla fine degli anni ’70 a vedere la nostra partita contro il Liverpool e sono rimasto affascinato dall’intera atmosfera dell’occasione. Poi la finale di FA Cup del 1980 contro l’Arsenal è stata La Giornata, all’età di 12 anni e mezzo, in cui ho davvero capito cosa significasse essere un hammer. Da quel giorno non ho più conosciuto altro.
What does the club represent for you? Cosa rappresenta il club per te?
The club for me isn’t just about football, it’s about a whole identity. A way of life, a way to carry yourself and always let people know where you are from and what it means to you. If you are traveling around the world and see someone with a West Ham shirt or tattoo you shout come on you irons and immediately you have a connection with that person. We are a very global family, who all share a common love.
Il club per me non è solo calcio, è un’intera identità. Uno stile di vita, un modo di portare sempre con te e far sapere sempre da dove vieni e cosa significa per te. Se stai viaggiando in giro per il mondo e vedi qualcuno con una maglia o un tatuaggio del West Ham, gridi “Come on you irons” e immediatamente hai un legame con quella persona. Siamo una famiglia globale, con tutti che condividono un amore comune.
What does it mean to be a Hammer? Cosa significa essere un Hammer?
To be a hammer for me, means loyalty , not just to the team but to the colours, the badge, the area but most of all to our fellow long suffering fans. We are most definitely not glory hunters, but we also have a great sense of humour and accept our place in the world but we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Essere un Hammer per me significa lealtà, non solo alla squadra ma anche ai colori, allo stemma, alla zona, ma soprattutto ai nostri compagni di “sofferenza”. Non siamo assolutamente cercatori di gloria, ma abbiamo anche un grande senso dell’umorismo e accettiamo il nostro posto nel mondo, e non lo cambieremmo per nulla al mondo.

Tell us your favorite West Ham memory Raccontaci il tuo ricordo preferito del West Ham
I have many many great memories, but oddly as a fan I would say my greatest memory was the 1991 FA cup semi final at Villa Park against Nottingham Forest. We lost 4 -0 but for about an hour and 15 minutes we did not stop bouncing up and down singing Billy Bonds claret and blue army . This showed everyone we as a fan base are special and loyal and our passion is unequal.
Ho molti bei ricordi, ma stranamente da tifoso direi che il mio più grande ricordo è stato la semifinale di FA Cup del 1991 a Villa Park contro il Nottingham Forest. Abbiamo perso 4-0 ma per circa un’ora e 15 minuti non abbiamo smesso di saltare su e giù cantando “Billy Bonds claret and blue army”. Questo ha dimostrato a tutti che noi come tifoseria siamo speciali e leali e la nostra passione è impareggiabile.
How do you see the Hammer fan? Come vedi i tifosi Hammer?
I see our fans as very knowledgeable, with a great sense of humour and able to laugh and take the piss out of ourselves. We travel all over in our hopes of seeing us lift a trophy but mostly it is mates of many years meeting up and having a laugh.
Vedo i nostri tifosi come molto informati, con un grande senso dell’umorismo e in grado di ridere e prendere in giro se stessi. Viaggiamo ovunque nella speranza di vedere sollevare un trofeo, ma soprattutto siamo amici di lunga data che si incontrano e si divertono insieme.
How was your passion for English football born? Com’è nata la tua passione per il calcio inglese?
Being English I naturally grew up watching the game on television and then going to games. I am a West Ham fan much more than a fan of our national team and I think you will find a large majority of us would prefer to see us win any trophy than the national team win a trophy. After West Ham won the world cup in 1966 so what can be bigger than that ?
Essendo inglese sono naturalmente cresciuto guardando il calcio in televisione e poi andando alle partite. Sono un tifoso del West Ham molto più che della nostra nazionale e penso che troverai una grande maggioranza di noi che preferirebbe vedere noi vincere un trofeo piuttosto che la nazionale vincere un trofeo. Dopo che il West Ham ha vinto la Coppa del Mondo nel 1966, cosa c’è di più grande di quello?
How did you get to know Station 936? Come hai conosciuto la Station 936?
I got to know about the station from a good friend of mine named Andy Halford who I know you also know well. Andy isn’t too well at the moment, I have visited him many times at hospital and he is slowly on the mend and I’m sure you all at station 936 wish him all the very best on his road to good health and recovery.
Ho conosciuto la stazione grazie a un mio caro amico di nome Andy Halford, che so che conoscete bene anche voi. Andy non sta molto bene al momento, l’ho visitato molte volte in ospedale e sta lentamente migliorando e sono sicuro che tutti voi della Station gli augurate il meglio per il suo cammino di guarigione e recupero.
Unfortunately we still have not met you at a Station 936 meeting Sfortunatamente non ci siamo ancora incontrati a un raduno della Station 936.
Maybe one day I will be able to meet you all and we can sing bubbles together. Forse un giorno potrò incontrarvi tutti e potremo cantare insieme “bubbles”.
What do you think about leaving Upton Park for the Olympic Stadium? Cosa ne pensi del passaggio da Upton Park all’Olympic Stadium?
For me leaving Upton Park was like a dagger to my heart. For me and so many others it was where I found my feet as a youngster and made friends for life. As I said I spent many years working there , so was getting paid to go to the place I loved most in the world, I cannot think of a better job. Also I met my wife there, and the connection goes further as my mum also worked there and my dad who was known by staff and fans as Charlie car park worked for many years there and his ashes are now still there since he passed away, at the memorial garden at the boleyn. I do still go to pay my respects.
Per me lasciare Upton Park è stato come una pugnalata al cuore. Per me e per tanti altri è stato lì dove ho imparato a camminare da giovane e ho fatto amicizie per la vita. Come ho detto, ho trascorso molti anni lavorando lì, quindi venivo pagato per andare nel posto che amavo di più al mondo, non potrei immaginare un lavoro migliore. Inoltre ho incontrato mia moglie lì, e il legame va oltre visto che anche mia mamma ha lavorato lì e mio papà, conosciuto dallo staff e dai tifosi come “Charlie car park”, ha lavorato per molti anni lì e le sue ceneri sono ancora lì da quando è scomparso, nel giardino commemorativo del Boleyn. Ci vado ancora a rendere omaggio. Upton Park in realtà era un buco, ma era il nostro buco.
In an hypothetical West Ham future, what would you like to see? In un ipotetico futuro del West Ham, cosa ti piacerebbe vedere?
I don’t want mega riches like Man City for us as I’ve seen how it has diluted their fan base and the same with Chelsea. I want us to remain a working class team for the working class fans , who can compete at the highest levels, but most importantly have a go at winning an FA cup once more or even the league cup.
Non voglio ricchezze smisurate come il Manchester City per noi perché ho visto come ha sminuito la loro tifoseria, e lo stesso vale per il Chelsea. Vorrei che rimanessimo una squadra di working class per tifosi di working class, potendo competere ai livelli più alti, ma soprattutto provando a vincere ancora una FA Cup o anche la League Cup.
Close your eyes, you are in the changing room with the boys in claret and blue about to get on the pitch. What would you say? Chiudi gli occhi, sei nello spogliatoio con i ragazzi in claret e blu, pronti a scendere in campo. Cosa diresti?
Out there in the crowd are people who pay huge amounts of money to come and cheer you on. The shirt you are about to wear, for them is special,it is sacred , never wear it if you cannot give one hundred percent. Give that one hundred percent and they will sing your name and take you into their hearts forever whether you win or lose. Most importantly the badge on that shirt, many have it tattooed on their skin, so do not kiss that badge unless you truly mean it , because for them fans out there it is holy.
Là fuori, tra la folla, ci sono persone che spendono enormi quantità di denaro per venire a tifare per voi. La maglia che state per indossare è speciale per loro, è sacra, non indossatela mai se non siete in grado di dare il 100%. Date quel 100% e loro canteranno il vostro nome e vi porteranno nei loro cuori per sempre, che voi vinciate o perdiate. Ma soprattutto lo stemma su quella maglia, molti lo hanno tatuato sulla pelle, quindi non baciatelo a meno che non lo sentiate veramente, perché per quei tifosi là fuori è sacro.
Tell us about your last away day Raccontaci del tuo ultimo away day
My last away game due to work commitments was Brighton. We went on the horn church coaches and had a great day with great people and somehow a great victory. Many beers were drunk and many songs were sung .
La mia ultima partita fuori casa, a causa degli impegni lavorativi, è stata contro il Brighton. Siamo partiti con i pullman di Horn Church e abbiamo passato una giornata fantastica con persone fantastiche e in qualche modo abbiamo ottenuto una grande vittoria. Sono state bevute molte birre e cantate molte canzoni.
